While lakes in the
Mississippi River valley are few and far between, Trempealeau
is blessed with several! The Trempealeau Lakes are found by
following Fremont Street south from the Mini-Mart on Hwy 35.
Directly after crossing the railroad tracks, veer right to
visit the lock & dam area, and continue straight ahead to
visit the lakes. About 1.5 miles from the railroad crossing,
the turn-off for the Lakes area is well-marked.
The Lakes are actually a
chain of seven small, picturesque spring-fed lakes which
provide great fishing (everything but walleye) and canoeing.
There are several boat landings and parking areas as well as a
shelter house. The largest lakes include Long Lake which
covers 22 acres; Round Lake, 40 acres and Third Lake, 29
acres.
Bait is available at Larry's
Landing. Notice that the cabins scattered throughout the area
are on stilts due to occasional flooding in the
Mississippi bottom land. Canoe Rental from the
Trempealeau Hotel.
The dirt road deteriorates
past Birch Acres, but it provides convenient walking access to
the Upper Mississippi River Wildlife and Fish Refuge
bottomlands.
